Nestled in the heart of the vibrant Rose Bay community, Washoku stands as a dedicated destination for those seeking an authentic exploration of Japanese culinary traditions. Located at 24 Plumer Rd, NSW 2023, this establishment serves as a quiet sanctuary where the philosophy of harmony, balance, and seasonal appreciation takes center stage. The restaurant is built upon the foundational belief that food should not only nourish the body but also provide a moment of respite from the bustle of daily life, offering a dining experience that respects the integrity of every ingredient used.
At Washoku, the approach to hospitality is rooted in the concept of omotenashi—a form of selfless service that anticipates the needs of the guest before they are even expressed. The atmosphere is intentionally curated to be understated and welcoming, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the interaction between the diner and the meal. By prioritizing quality over complexity, the kitchen team ensures that each dish reflects the natural flavors of the produce, honoring the time-honored techniques that define Japanese gastronomy while remaining accessible to the local Rose Bay neighborhood.
What Defines the Washoku Experience
Commitment to Seasonal Integrity: The menu is thoughtfully designed to align with the natural rhythms of the seasons. By sourcing ingredients at their peak, the kitchen ensures that every plate captures the freshest possible flavors, maintaining a deep connection to the environment and the agricultural cycle.
Mastery of Traditional Techniques: Every preparation method employed at Washoku is a tribute to the precision of Japanese culinary arts. From the careful handling of delicate ingredients to the balanced seasoning of staple components, the chefs apply rigorous standards to ensure consistency and authenticity in every serving.
A Serene Neighborhood Atmosphere: Situated on Plumer Road, the restaurant offers a tranquil environment that serves as a perfect backdrop for intimate gatherings or quiet reflection. The interior design emphasizes simplicity and comfort, creating a space where guests can fully immerse themselves in the dining experience without distraction.
Focus on Ingredient Purity: The culinary philosophy here avoids unnecessary embellishments. Instead, the goal is to highlight the inherent qualities of the produce, allowing the textures and subtle nuances of the food to speak for themselves through clean, intentional presentation.
A Culinary Destination in Rose Bay
Whether you are a long-time enthusiast of Japanese cuisine or someone looking to experience these traditional flavors for the first time, Washoku offers a welcoming environment that values quality and consistency above all else. The restaurant aims to be more than just a place to eat; it strives to be a consistent part of the Rose Bay landscape, providing a reliable and high-quality dining option for the local community. By maintaining a steady focus on the core tenets of Japanese cooking—simplicity, respect for ingredients, and attentive service—Washoku invites guests to slow down and appreciate the artistry involved in every meal.
We invite you to visit us at 24 Plumer Rd to experience a dining approach that prioritizes the guest’s comfort and the integrity of the food. Very cosy Japanese dining experience. Highly rated. If you are after a relaxed version of raw bar this is where you should go. Does get pretty busy however is very homily. Very affordable so great for a mid week dinner.

Very frustrating. Say they’re open until 9.30, in which case you should be able order until 9.30. To refuse to take a take-away order at 8.30 is just ridiculous. If your kitchen closes at 8.30 then your closed!! It’s not that difficult to communicate with your clientele accurately. More

This was so good I had to come back twice despite only staying in Sydney a few nights. I had the Poke bowl one night and the soup, plus a nice green tea. Atmosphere was great, it’s quite a ‘cosy’ space, and seemed popular with the locals. Highly recommend. More

Really terrible food. I think they even served me boil in the bag rice! Those reviewers who say it's 'authentic Japanese' have clearly never spent any time in Japan. Char grilled brussel sprouts with teriyaki salmon - burned on the outside, raw most of the way through.... come on.... it's a joke...

By far , this place has delicious Japanese menu. Staff are very friendly and food is made and serve fresh. I have been to different Japanese restaurant in Sydney but their miso soup and gyoza to start with is divine!
We definitely enjoyed our lunch and the local vibe here .

The food at Washoku is very good, but sadly there’s no way to know whether or when the Rose Bay location is operating. They appear to be open sometimes (when the stars align?) so if you’re lucky and passing by at that moment, then you can order :/ More

the food was fantastic but I got a shock when we got the bill- we were charged $30 corkage fee for bringing 2 bottles of wine ($15 per bottle) between 3 of us. Both bottles were half full so we only had 2 drink each- a total rort! This should have been made transparent to us prior to seating, it really put me off visiting again! More
